Iqbal Singh Chahal, a 1989-batch IAS officer and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner is now being celebrated across the board for his handling of the Covid-19 crisis in Mumbai, a year after he took over.
Chahal was even awarded the ‘Lokmat Maharashtrian of the Year 2021 Award’ by Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman earlier this year, and praised by another Union Minister, Hardeep Singh Puri, for “right approach and judicious use of resources”.

- Iqbal Singh Chahal had worked as the CEO of Dharavi Redevelopment Project. The situation of Covid – 19 has improved quite surprisingly in Dharavi, and Mr. Chahal is being credited for the same.
- He is a fitness freak and has taken part in Mumbai Marathon since 2004.
- He has been severely criticized for towing the line of the MVA Government in hounding Kangana Ranaut. BMC under his leadership had started to demolish the office of Kangana after giving her a very short notice. The Bombay High Court had ordered the BMC to stop the demolition. The episode will be remembered as a black spot on the career of Iqbal Singh.
